Car Insurance: The Point Permit

How the permit works

In France, the point license was created with the law n ° 89-469 of 10 July 1989.
Each driver has an "initial capital" of 12 points.  The withdrawal of points attached to the driver's license is done automatically when certain offenses are established.

Depending on the seriousness of the offense or the contravention committed, the loss of points varies, but never more than 6 points for an offense .
1 point is removed from the permit for overlap of a continuous line or an overrun of less than 20 km / h from the authorized speed
-  2 points will be withdrawn if the speed exceeds 20 to 30 km / H Authorized use of a handheld phone, Traffic or parking on a motorway central reservation, etc.
-  3 points shall be withdrawn in the event of unjustified traffic on the left side of the carriageway, significant change of direction without ensuring that the maneuver is safe or without informing the other passengers, exceeding the permitted speed between 30 and 40 Km / H, Emergency Stop Traffic, Not Seat Belt Wear, etc.
4 points in the event of a violation (speeding, refusal of priority, dangerous overtaking, failure to respect the red light ...).
6 points in the event of an offense (alcoholism, manslaughter, absconding offense, refusal to comply ...)

If the points' capital is "exhausted"

Know your number of points

The administrative or judicial authorities inform you by letter of the number of points held on your license.

Recover lost points

The capital is reconstituted automatically after 3 years without infringement likely to cause a withdrawal of points.

The driver can also recover 4 points thanks to specific training on driver behavior in a center approved by the administration.
The driver may not, however, perform more than one training course every 2 years.
