Car Insurance: What is the Malus Bonus?

The principles of the Bonus Malus

The bonus-malus (or "reduction-increase clause") has been compulsory since 1976 with the aim of encouraging prudence. The effect of the premium / car insurance contribution is to adapt the behavior of the driver Vehicle insured.

This variation results from the application of a higher or lower level coefficient on the "civil liability" and "damage" parts of the contribution depending on whether or not the driver (s) were responsible for accidents during The annual period or periods elapsed.

The operation of the Bonus Malus

The Bonus Malus or reduction / increase coefficient (CRM) applies to all passenger cars, light trucks and motorcycles over 80 cm3. All motorists therefore have a Bonus or Malus.

The premium / auto insurance premium payable at each annual maturity is influenced by the decline or increase in this indicator that reflects your "good behavior".
When you do not have an accident, you get a bonus and your bonus normally decreases, but if you cause an accident, you will be penalized with a penalty and you will pay a higher fee .

The calculation period for the Bonus Malus

The malus bonus is calculated by the insurance companies over a period of 12 consecutive months (preceding by two months the annual deadline).
This means that the insurer stops your auto insurance policy two months before it expires so you can calculate your premium and send you your notice of expiry.
An accident that occurs one month before your main deadline would only be taken into account the following year.

For example, for an auto insurance contract with a principal maturity date of July 1 of each year, the calculation period would extend from 01.05 to 30.04 of the previous year.
It is during this period that you will be exposed to any claims you may have suffered.

The Evolution of the Bonus Malus
The Bonus Malus progresses with each main deadline. It is calculated by means of a multiplier coefficient, the original coefficient being equal to 100 (Young driver).
The basic premium is multiplied by this reduction / increase coefficient.

If there is no claim during the 12 months, the bonus of the previous year is multiplied by 0.95 (or 5% reduction) in standard use (private or private and journeys + place of work), and by 0.93 (Ie 7% reduction) in the context of "touring" or "all journeys".
In the case of a standard use (private or private and journeys + place of work), the bonus will change each year by multiplying the bonus of the previous year by the coefficient 0.95.

For example, the bonus obtained from a bonus of 1 after three years without an accident will be 0.85 (obtained by calculation 0.95 * 0.95 * 0.95 = 0.85) .
It takes 13 years without accident to reach the maximum bonus of 50%.

The Maximum Bonus

The "maximum" bonus that can be reached is 50%. Once you have reached it (after 13 years without accidents) you will no longer be able to "progress".
However, if you have a 50% bonus for more than 3 years, then you will have "right" to a responsible accident or not without this 50% bonus changing.

Some insurers sometimes grant enhanced bonuses, but these are commercial promotions, in order to retain their safest customers. If you change your insurer, you lose this enhanced bonus and get a 50% bonus at most.

Sinitres that do not impact the Malus Bonus

In general, it is not taken into account in the calculation of the Bonus Malus for Vol / Fire / Icebreaker / Storm claims which are generally not the responsibility of the insured.

If you are the victim of an accident for which you are not responsible, your Bonus Malus will not move.
Only claims for which your total or partial liability is incurred will affect your Bonus.

Impact of a Sinister on the Bonus Malus

In the event of a disaster, you must complete an amicable report. Thanks to the information provided in this document, your insurer will be able to determine your share of responsibility for the loss:

- If you are only partially responsible for the accident, the mark-up applied to your previous bonus will be 12.5%, or 1.125. A bonus of 0.75 will then become 0.75 * 1.125 = 0.84.

- If you are totally responsible for the accident, the mark-up applied to your bonus of the previous due date will be 25%, or 1.25. A bonus of 0.75 will then become 0.75 * 1.25 = 0.94.

- If more than one claim occurs during the same reference period, each loss will result in the calculation of a new coefficient.
Two totally responsible claims during the same year will lead to a bonus of 1.25 * 1.25 = 1.56

Benefit from the parental bonus by ensuring under the same name

To qualify for the parental bonus by insuring under the same name, you must be an occasional driver. That means you will borrow your parents' vehicle from time to time, you can actually declare yourself an "occasional driver" on their auto insurance contract and get their bonus at an extra premium. Your bonus will then be replenished the day you will be directly insured.

On the other hand, if you are the main driver of the vehicle and you are a young driver, you can not insure yourself on their behalf. Otherwise, the risk is to be objected to a nullity of the auto insurance contract young driver for reason of false declaration.

Declare in any case your specific situation to the insurer under pain of real problems on the day of the disaster ...

Auto Bonus and Motorcycle Bonus

Most companies specifically distinguish between the two types of bonus.
So they are not necessarily equivalent for a person insured for both a car and a motorcycle.
A disaster on one of the two vehicles should therefore not impact the bonus of the other vehicle.
